Custom Bags Packaging by ZEE Packaging

Bags are one of the hardest working pieces of packaging any brand owns. They leave your store, they walk down the street, they sit on a kitchen counter for weeks, and they keep on selling for you long after the sale is finished. At ZEE Packaging we produce custom paper bags, fabric tote bags and poly bags for retail stores, restaurants, ecommerce sellers, beauty labels and event organizers all across the United States and worldwide. Our bags packaging is built around your product weight, your budget and the way your customer actually carries the thing home.

Design and Branding for Bags Packaging

A bag has less real estate than a folding carton but it gets seen by far more people. That trade off shapes every design decision we make with our clients.

  • Imagery placement works best when it sits above the fold line of the bag, because the lower third disappears when a customer holds the bag at their side.
  • Typography on bags should stay bolder and larger than what you would use on a box. Thin hairline fonts under 8pt tend to break up on uncoated kraft paper and on non woven fabric.
  • Logo scaling matters a lot on tote bags packaging, since screen printing has a minimum line weight and very fine logo details will fill in.
  • QR codes we print at a minimum of 0.8 inch square with a quiet zone around them, and we always test scan them off the printed sample before mass production.
  • Color psychology plays into bags packaging more than most people expect. Retail bags in deep colors read premium, while natural kraft reads honest and eco.

Our in house design team can build the whole look from scratch or simply place your existing logo on our dieline for free. We work with brand guidelines, Pantone books and existing box artwork so your bags packaging matches your cartons, labels and hang tags without any mismatch in shade.

Artwork Preparation

Getting files right the first time is what keeps a job on schedule. Send us AI, PDF, EPS or PSD files with fonts outlined and images at 300 DPI. Color mode should be CMYK or Pantone spot colors. Add a 1/8 inch bleed on all sides and keep live text at least 0.25 inch inside the trim.

For bags packaging specifically there is a few extra things to know. Handle holes, gusset folds and glue flaps all eat into your printable area. Our prepress team overlays your artwork onto the actual bag dieline and shows you exactly where the fold lines land, so a headline does not end up creasing straight through the middle. Poly bags need artwork built for reverse printing on the inside surface of the film, and tote bags need artwork separated into individual screens when you order screen printing. If your files needs adjusting we tell you before anything goes to plate.

Materials and Structural Options

Material is where bags packaging really splits into three different worlds.

Paper bags run from about 35 GSM up to 300 GSM. We stock white kraft paper, natural brown kraft paper, recycled paper, coated paper, art paper, cardstock, glassine paper, grease resistant paper and specialty textured stocks. Bottom construction includes flat bottom, square bottom, pinch bottom, block bottom and reinforced bottom. Gussets can be side, bottom, both, expandable or left out completely for flat merchandise bags.

Fabric and tote bags run roughly 80 GSM to 600 GSM. Options include cotton, organic cotton, canvas, cotton canvas, jute, burlap, linen, non woven polypropylene, polyester, recycled PET fabric, nylon, felt and blended fabrics. Construction can be single stitched, double stitched, reinforced seam, cross stitched handle or heavy duty for grocery loads.

Poly bags run about 1 mil to 8 mil in LDPE, HDPE, LLDPE, polypropylene, cast polypropylene, recycled polyethylene and compostable film. Film appearance can be clear, frosted, opaque, tinted, matte, glossy, metallic, white or black.

Handles are their own decision. Twisted paper handles, flat paper handles, cotton rope, ribbon, die cut, reinforced, cotton webbing, self fabric, soft loop, patch, drawstring and T shirt handles all carry different weight ratings and send different signals about your brand.

Finishing and Printing Techniques

Printing method depends on substrate, quantity and how much color coverage you want.

  • Offset printing for paper bags packaging at higher volumes with tight color control
  • Digital printing for short runs, variable data and fast proofs
  • Flexographic printing for poly bags and long paper runs
  • Rotogravure for very large poly bag orders with photographic artwork
  • Screen printing for cotton and canvas totes, and for spot color work on paper
  • Digital textile, DTG, heat transfer and sublimation for full color fabric bags packaging

Finishing on paper bags includes matte, gloss, soft touch, varnish, aqueous coating, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, metallic effects and textured finishes. Fabric bags can have washed finishes, dyed fabric, water resistant coating, waxed finish or laminated interior. Poly bags take matte, gloss, soft touch, spot varnish, metallic, corona treatment and anti static treatment.

Branding add ons for totes include embroidery, woven labels, printed labels, leather patches, rubber patches and appliqué. For paper bags we add reinforced top and bottom boards, eyelets, tissue paper, hang tags, stickers, window cutouts, ribbon closures and inserts. Poly bags take hang holes, euro slots, tear notches, perforations, vent holes, barcode labels, security seals and press to close or slider zippers.

Regulatory and Safety

Bags packaging that touches food has to meet FDA food contact requirements, and we supply food grade paper, grease resistant paper, glassine, wax coated paper, water based barrier coatings and food contact grade films for exactly that. Freezer safe film, bakery bags, produce bags and ice bags all fall under this same category.

Poly bags over a certain size sold at retail in many states requires a suffocation warning printed on the bag. We add that warning text as standard when the application calls for it. California Prop 65 labeling, state single use bag laws, plastic bag thickness minimums for reusable classification and FTC Green Guides for recycling claims all affect what you can print on your bags packaging. Our team flags these things during the quote stage rather than after your order ships.

For children's products and cosmetics we can also add child resistant closures, tamper evident seals and lot coding.

Sustainability and Eco Friendly Bags Packaging

Sustainable bags packaging is not a niche request any more, it is most of what we quote. On paper bags we offer recycled paper stock, FSC certified paper, soy based inks, water based inks and uncoated finishes that stay fully recyclable and compostable. Natural kraft bags with no lamination are about the cleanest paper bags packaging you can buy.

On fabric we work with organic cotton, recycled cotton, recycled PET, jute and natural canvas. Reusable tote bags packaging replaces dozens of single use bags over its lifetime, which is why so many grocery chains and retailers switched over.

On poly we offer post consumer recycled polyethylene, reduced gauge film, compostable film and store drop off recyclable structures. Reducing film gauge by even half a mil across a large order takes a real amount of plastic out of circulation.

We can supply FSC certificates and material documentation for your sustainability reporting on request.

Packaging Engineering

Bags fail at the handle and at the bottom, so that is where our engineering attention goes. We calculate load capacity against paper GSM, fabric weight and film gauge, then match the handle and bottom construction to it. Reinforced top boards and bottom boards spread stress on paper bags packaging. Cross stitched handles and reinforced bottom panels do the same job on totes. Tear resistance on poly comes from film selection and gauge rather than structure.

We also look at flat pack efficiency for shipping performance, stackability on pallet, and cushioning or insert needs when the bag carries something fragile like glass jars or wine bottles.

Manufacturing Process

Paper bags packaging goes through printing, die cutting, creasing, gluing, handle attachment and folding. Fabric bags go through cutting, printing or embroidery, stitching and finishing. Poly bags go through extrusion, printing, sealing and converting.

Color matching against your Pantone reference happens at press setup, and our quality team pulls samples throughout the run. Every stage gets inspected, from raw material inward check through print, cut, glue or stitch, and final assembly. Nothing leaves our ISO certified facilities without a final inspection. Proofs come as 3D mockup, flat artwork view, digital proof, printed fabric swatch or film sample, and physical samples on request.
